The Key to Change is in the Power of Same

Guest Post by Dr. Brian Class

Steven Furtick once said “If you resist the MONOTONOUS, you will miss the MIRACULOUS.”

In our society, we are obsessed with the SPARKLE – the latest and greatest simple fix to all our problems and health woes. This strategy is at an all-time high at the beginning of a new year. The results DO NOT give us the end result that we desire, like a “New Year, New You.” Instead, it results in NEW YEAR…SAME OLE’ YOU!

So, now that the SPARKLE of January has worn off, I want to give you a plan that you can apply to every facet of your health and give you the results you desire. If you follow these 3 simple steps, this can be your best year yet!

  1. CHANGE YOUR PATTERNS
  2. EMBRACE THE PROCESS
  3. HARNESS THE POWER OF SAME

CHANGE YOUR PATTERNS
The problems that you have are due to the patterns of your behavior that you have created. If you change your patterns, you will change your problems.

If you are consistently missing your morning workout, then set your alarm 15 minutes earlier.

If you are finding yourself eating fast food, busting your budget and your gut, then meal plan/shop/prepare on the weekend for the week ahead. Prepare ready-to-eat meals you can heat up for the week.

EMBRACE THE PROCESS
People often say to me, “Well I tried that and it didn’t work.” My response is “That’s because you didn’t work it.” We often want to treat our problems and our health like a Genie.

I wish I had (blank).
I wish I were (blank).

No one has gotten anything accomplished by simply wishing it. You must work it! Instead of desiring the reward and admiring the results, embrace the routine that produces those results.

HARNESS THE POWER OF SAME
Since most of us practice “BAD SAMES,” the word SAME has gotten a bad rap.

Here are some examples:

  • STAGNANT SAME: settling into something because it is comfortable.
  • STUPID SAME: always doing the same thing and getting the same stupid result.
  • STUBBORN SAME: “it’s just the way I am” -doing the same thing and getting the same bad result.
  • SCARED SAME: avoiding and circling around the same issue because of fear of change.

The power of “GOOD SAME” routine is the reward!

Don’t be afraid of staying the same – good same, that is. “Stay the path, steady your pace.” Remember the tortoise won the race, not the hare.
