Coping with Pregnancy Loss

October 15 is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.

1 out of 4 women.
Mothers, sisters, wives, aunts, daughters.

That is the current startling statistic of pregnancy loss. The US has a very high rate of miscarriage, stillbirth and infant mortality. In fact, the US is one of the only countries that does not truly recognize the loss of the baby with a ceremony, ritual, or cultural tradition. Pregnancy loss is crippling and painful and unfortunately, this kind of loss isn’t always acknowledged. The grief can be debilitating and overwhelming. It is often referred to as “the invisible loss.” Some couples may find it difficult to talk about or share different feelings. The emotional impact of this loss can create feelings of worthlessness and guilt. It can also leave individuals feeling angry or extremely depressed. All of these feeling are completely normal.

WomensHealth.gov has some great ways to help get couples through this difficult time.

  • Turn to loved ones and friends for support. Share your feelings and ask for help when you need it.
  • Talk to your partner about your loss. Keep in mind that men and women cope with loss in different ways.
  • Take care of yourself. Eating healthy foods, keeping active, and getting enough sleep will help restore energy and well-being.
  • Join a support group. A support group will help you to feel less isolated.
  • Create a remembrance ceremony, memory box, or annual ritual with your spouse or family. Expect milestones to be the hardest (baby shower dates, due dates, birthdays, holidays).
  • Seek help from a grief counselor, especially if your grief doesn’t ease with time.
  • Take time to grieve the loss. It will take time, and is different for everyone.
